In 1975 at the Marienplatz in Munich, pedestrian zone, I saw a shop window with beautiful oil paintings, portraits. At that time I thought that the artist was a master of his craft and that he must be old. He must have had a lot of practice and experience. I never saw these pictures again. The painter had possibly died, like Leonardo, Rubens, and many others before him. I no longer get to see any similar artists. If I do, it’s only rarely, in holiday areas for instance. With regard to price, these are much cheaper, for the people who commission these paintings usually haven’t got much money and are stuck in their old ways. Nowadays, people are a bit more sophisticated than the people of the Romantic, who for prestigious reasons commissioned pictures en mass. What other way to express their power apart from wars, they didn’t have anything back then. And the painters who created these commissioned pictures were but a mirror of their time. Not until later did people learn to better utilize their reasoning, and thus painters could be found who would also apply reasoning.
